Growing the Future of Yellagonga Regional Park

Yellagonga Regional Park is a precious natural corridor supporting diverse native flora and fauna across woodlands, wetlands, and bushland habitats. At Friends of Yellagonga (FOY), we are proud to play an active role in restoring and protecting this important ecosystem. Our on-site native plant nursery is the heart of our revegetation efforts. Operated entirely by passionate, trained volunteers, the nursery grows all plants from seed, using local provenance species that are suited to the specific conditions of Yellagonga Regional Park. Plants are raised with care through the seasons and are planted back into the park when ready, helping to build a healthier, more resilient natural environment.

To guide our planting choices, FOY consult with Natural Area Consulting Management Services. In 2023, Natural Area was commissioned by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) to develop a Revegetation Species List tailored specifically for Yellagonga Regional Park. This list is based on site assessments conducted by a qualified botanist and includes species endemic to the area, suited to the park’s five key vegetation types:

  • Paperbark (Melaleuca) – Woodland
  • Flooded Gum (Eucalyptus rudis) – Woodland
  • Jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata)-Marri (Corymbia calophylla) – Banksia Open Woodland
  • Tuart (Eucalyptus gomphocephala) – Jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata) – Marri (Corymbia calophylla) – Open Forest
  • Sedgeland

The species list supports our goal of planting appropriate, locally adapted flora across different zones of the park. It also helps ensure ecological integrity and increases the success rate of revegetation projects.

Whether you’re curious about native plants or want to get involved, we welcome you to visit the nursery and learn more about how we’re helping restore Yellagonga, one plant at a time. As the nursery operates on a volunteer schedule, please email friendsofyellagonga@outlook.com before visiting or volunteering to arrange a suitable time.
